Nu Metro, together with advertising arm Popcorn, were sold and operated independently from 1 January 2014. Nu Metro Cinemas operates 17 cineplexes in South Africa. It is the second-largest cinema operator in South Africa, (Ster-Kinekor Theatres being the largest). In 2009, Nu Metro Cinemas opened Africa's first all-digital cinema complex at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 6-screen cineplex includes one of Africa's largest cinemas, the Pantheon, as well as dedicated 3D cinemas. Late in 2014 Nu Metro opened Scene Xtreme cinemas at The Glen and Menlyn Park. this being their answer to the large screen format offered by IMAX at other sites.
